How Fire Investigators Determine Where a House Fire Started
After a residential fire, investigators often focus on identifying the point of origin where the flames first developed. Burn patterns, smoke damage, and the condition of electrical equipment can help determine how the fire began.
Fires that start in enclosed sections of a home may spread quickly before occupants become aware of the danger. Smoke movement and ventilation conditions can also affect how rapidly flames travel through the structure.
Investigators usually examine appliances, wiring, and combustible materials found near the suspected origin area. Structural damage and firefighting water can sometimes complicate efforts to determine the exact cause.
