How DWI-Related High-Speed Crashes Often Turn Fatal
Crashes involving impaired driving and high speeds often lead to severe outcomes due to delayed reaction times and reduced control of the vehicle. When a driver loses control at highway or near-highway speeds, vehicles can easily leave the roadway and strike fixed objects such as trees or medians.
Rollover crashes are especially dangerous because they can cause repeated impacts as the vehicle overturns. Investigators typically examine speed data, roadway evidence, vehicle damage, and toxicology results to determine contributing factors. In fatal cases, additional review focuses on how the vehicle left the roadway and the sequence of impacts that led to the most severe injuries.
