Why Train Crossing Signals Matter at Road Intersections
Rail crossings are equipped with warning systems such as flashing lights and crossing arms to alert drivers when a train is approaching. These signals are designed to provide enough time for vehicles to stop safely before a train reaches the intersection.
Trains require much longer stopping distances than cars, making it difficult to avoid a collision once a vehicle is on the tracks. Even at low speeds, a train’s size and weight can lead to serious outcomes in a crash.
Driver attention and patience at crossings can reduce risk. Ignoring signals or attempting to cross after warnings activate can place vehicles directly in the path of an oncoming train.
