Riverside, CA (January 16, 2026) – A tragic wrong-way collision on the 215 Freeway early on Wednesday morning claimed the life of 32-year-old Raulder Sotelo, a resident of Riverside, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly crash occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m. on January 14, after CHP officers received reports of a silver Mitsubishi Galant traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near Cactus Ave. Multiple 911 calls indicated the vehicle was narrowly missing oncoming cars as it sped the wrong way down the freeway.
Shortly after, the Mitsubishi collided head-on with a silver Toyota Camry being driven by Sotelo near Central Ave. Emergency crews responded to the scene, but Sotelo was tragically pronounced deceased due to the severe impact of the crash.
The 20-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi, a resident of Moreno Valley, sustained major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. CHP officials stated that alcohol or drug impairment is suspected to have contributed to the wrong-way driving and resulting collision.
The southbound lanes of the 215 Freeway were temporarily closed as investigators documented the scene and collected evidence. The investigation into the crash remains active, and toxicology reports are pending for the wrong-way driver.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Raulder Sotelo during this difficult time.
