What Are the Risks for Skateboarders Sharing Roads in Michigan Cities?
Skateboarders who ride on or near roadways face serious risks, particularly during low-light hours when visibility is reduced for both riders and drivers. Unlike bicyclists, skateboarders are often lower to the ground and harder for drivers to spot, especially at night or in areas with limited street lighting. In Michigan cities, shared roads and intersections can be especially hazardous for anyone not inside a vehicle.
Early morning hours add another layer of danger, as traffic patterns are less predictable and some drivers may not expect to encounter pedestrians or riders on the road. Reaction time is also reduced at highway or arterial road speeds, giving drivers very little time to stop or swerve when someone appears in their path. These conditions make roadway safety a shared concern for both drivers and those traveling on foot or wheels.
