San Diego, CA (May 1, 2026) – A 29-year-old man died Thursday night after a crash involving a transit bus in downtown San Diego. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. in the 300 block of West B Street in the Core Columbia neighborhood.
Emergency units responded to the scene after reports of a man being struck by a bus. Investigators say the man had been lying near the north curbline when a San Diego Metropolitan Transit System bus stopped nearby.
For reasons still under review, the man moved part of his body into the roadway as the bus prepared to leave the curb. As the bus pulled away, it ran over his lower legs, causing fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his identity has not yet been released.
Additional details about what led to the incident have not been made available.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Bus-Related Incidents Can Occur Near Curbs and Stops
Incidents involving buses near curbs often happen in areas where pedestrians and vehicles share limited space. Bus operators rely on clear visibility when pulling in and out of stops, but blind spots can make it harder to detect movement close to the vehicle.
People near the curb or roadway edge may be at greater risk, especially if they are not fully visible or move unexpectedly. Large vehicles like buses require more space and time to safely re-enter traffic.
Urban areas with frequent stops can increase the chance of close interactions between buses and pedestrians. Staying clear of the roadway and maintaining visibility around large vehicles can help reduce the likelihood of such incidents.
