What Is a Traffic Homicide Investigation in New Mexico?
A traffic homicide investigation is launched in New Mexico whenever a crash results in a death. It does not mean a crime has necessarily been committed; it is simply the formal process used to determine exactly how and why a fatal crash occurred. Specially trained investigators examine the scene, the vehicles, road conditions, and any other available evidence.
These investigations take time because thoroughness matters more than speed. Measurements, photos, and physical evidence from the scene all contribute to a final report documenting the cause of the crash. In New Mexico, this process is handled by dedicated units within county sheriff’s offices or state police, depending on where the crash takes place.
Road closures during a traffic homicide investigation can last several hours, as the scene must remain as undisturbed as possible while evidence is gathered. Detours are set up to keep traffic moving safely around the area.
