How Single-Vehicle Rollover Crashes Can Lead to Severe Injuries
Single-vehicle rollover crashes often occur when a car leaves the roadway and hits a fixed object, such as a culvert, ditch, or embankment. The sudden change in terrain can cause the vehicle to tip or overturn, especially if the wheels dig into soft ground.
Occupant injuries in rollover crashes are often influenced by seatbelt use. When seatbelts are not worn, passengers may be more vulnerable to being thrown around in the vehicle during an impact. Even in lower-speed crashes, rolling motion can increase the risk of serious harm.
Emergency response to these incidents may involve extrication when occupants are trapped inside the vehicle. Crews typically stabilize the car before removing passengers to prevent further injury. Investigators later examine roadway conditions, vehicle damage, and occupant positioning to better understand how the crash unfolded.
