Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur on Busy Urban Roads
Pedestrian crashes frequently occur along heavily traveled city streets, where vehicle and foot traffic share limited space. Intersections and multi-lane corridors can create situations where drivers may not immediately see someone walking in or near the roadway.
Visibility conditions can also influence how quickly drivers notice pedestrians. Nighttime driving, street lighting, and traffic flow may affect how easily someone on foot is seen, particularly outside marked crossing areas.
Road layout is another factor that can influence these incidents. Wide streets, multiple lanes, and turning movements can increase the likelihood that a driver will encounter a pedestrian unexpectedly. Because of these conditions, pedestrian safety often depends on clear visibility and careful attention from both drivers and people walking near busy roadways.
