Pedestrian Risks on Rural Mountain Access Roads
Roadways near recreational areas, such as Stratton Mountain Access Road, can carry a mix of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Visitors, workers, and residents may travel along these routes, particularly during busy seasons.
Rural access roads may include limited lighting, narrow shoulders, and changing elevation. These conditions can make it harder for drivers to notice pedestrians traveling along the roadway, especially during early morning or nighttime hours.
When vehicles approach from behind, pedestrians may have little warning before a collision occurs. Visibility, traffic speed, and roadway design can all influence how these incidents happen on mountain access routes leading to ski areas and other recreational locations.
