Why Highway Crossings Can Be Dangerous for Cyclists
Crossing busy highways on a bicycle or e-bike can be especially dangerous due to high vehicle speeds and limited reaction time for drivers. Unlike intersections with traffic signals or marked crossings, highway entrances and commercial driveways may not provide cyclists with protected crossing areas.
E-bikes can also reach higher speeds than traditional bicycles, which may reduce the time drivers have to recognize and respond to someone entering the roadway. In multi-lane traffic environments, visibility can become limited when vehicles block sightlines between drivers and cyclists.
Serious injuries are common in these crashes because cyclists have little physical protection during impact. Investigators often review witness accounts, vehicle movement, and roadway conditions to determine how the collision occurred.
