Sioux Center, IA (May 13, 2026) – A Sioux Center motorcyclist suffered suspected serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash on Tuesday, May 12. The accident happened around 1:08 p.m. near a T-intersection on 11th Avenue Northeast.
Officials identified the motorcyclist as 68-year-old Armando Hurtado of Sioux Center. He was riding a 1984 Honda motorcycle westbound when it collided with a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.
The pickup was driven by 27-year-old Collin Matthew Den Herder of Sioux Center. Officials said Den Herder was southbound and was attempting to turn westbound before the collision occurred.
Hurtado was taken by ambulance to Sioux Center Health with suspected serious or incapacitating injuries. The report said he was wearing a Department of Transportation-compliant helmet at the time of the crash. Den Herder was uninjured, and both vehicles sustained minor damage.
The crash remains under investigation. Additional details may become available as authorities continue their review. We are thinking of Armando Hurtado and hope for a full recovery.
Why Motorcycle Crashes at T-Intersections Can Be Serious
T-intersections can pose a risk when one road ends and traffic must turn onto another roadway. Drivers may need to judge distance, speed, and lane position before entering or crossing a travel path.
Motorcycle riders can be especially vulnerable in these crashes. A motorcycle is smaller than a passenger vehicle, and riders have less protection during impact. Even crashes with minor vehicle damage can lead to serious injuries for the rider.
Helmet use can reduce the risk of severe head trauma, but it cannot prevent every injury. After a motorcycle crash, medical teams often check for broken bones, internal injuries, and other trauma that may not be clear right away.
