Smyrna, GA (May 8, 2026) – Emergency units responded shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Friday, May 8, after a multi-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 285 in Cobb County.
Authorities said the crash happened between Cobb Parkway and Highway 41. A semi-truck and six other vehicles were involved, and all northbound lanes were initially shut down during the morning commute.
One lane was later reopened, but traffic delays stretched for several miles near the crash scene. Hazmat crews also responded after a fuel spill was reported on the roadway.
Preliminary information indicated that injuries were reported, but officials did not immediately release the number of injured people or their conditions.
The crash remains under investigation; additional details may become available as authorities continue their review.
We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
How Semi-Truck Crashes Can Affect Interstate Traffic
Crashes involving semi-trucks can create major traffic problems because large vehicles take up more space and may be harder to move. When several vehicles are involved, crews often need extra time to check each vehicle and clear damaged debris.
Fuel spills can also slow the reopening of lanes. Hazmat crews could need to inspect the road, contain the spill, and reduce fire or environmental risks before traffic can move normally again.
Morning commute crashes can affect a wider area because traffic is already heavy. Backups may spread quickly to ramps, nearby highways, and alternate routes. Even after one lane reopens, delays can continue until vehicles, debris, and cleanup crews are fully cleared from the scene.
