Snyder Township, PA (March 28, 2026) – A deadly head-on crash claimed the life of a 50-year-old man on Interstate 99 northbound in Blair County. The incident occurred around 5:48 a.m. on Friday, March 27, near the Tyrone exit.
Authorities reported that Jason Hoppel of Ebensburg was driving a 2019 Mercedes-Benz when a 2015 Mercedes-Benz entered the northbound lanes traveling the wrong way. Their identity has not been released at this time.
Emergency units from multiple volunteer fire departments, PennDOT crews, and the coroner’s office responded to the scene. Northbound lanes of I-99 were temporarily closed but have since reopened.
The incident remains under review by authorities.
Our condolences go out to the family of Hoppel.
Why Wrong-Way Driving Can Lead to Severe Crashes
Wrong-way driving on highways is extremely dangerous because collisions often occur at high speeds with little time for drivers to react. Head-on impacts like this are among the deadliest types of roadway crashes.
Factors that contribute to wrong-way driving can include driver confusion, fatigue, impairment, or missed exits. Even brief moments in the wrong lane can result in catastrophic outcomes.
Vehicle safety features, such as airbags and seatbelts, can help reduce injuries, but the force of a head-on crash often makes survival unlikely. Awareness of road signs and paying close attention to lane markings are key to avoiding these situations.
