Sodus, NY (February 28, 2026) – One man was killed, and another was injured on Friday morning, February 27, following a head-on crash in Wayne County. The collision occurred around 7 a.m. on Route 104 near Route 14 in the town of Sodus.
Officials said a vehicle driven eastbound by 77-year-old Claude Krieger of Red Creek crossed into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming vehicle. The impact caused significant damage, leaving both vehicles disabled at the scene.
Krieger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was trapped inside and had to be freed before being taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with a head injury. No additional details about his condition were released.
Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted while emergency crews responded and cleared the roadway. Route 104 has since reopened to normal traffic flow.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Our condolences are with Mr. Krieger’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
How Head-On Crashes Often Occur on Two-Lane Highways
Head-on crashes on two-lane highways frequently happen when a vehicle crosses the center line, whether due to distraction, fatigue, medical issues, or loss of control. Even a brief drift into oncoming traffic can leave drivers with little time to react.
Morning travel hours may also increase risk, as drivers adjust to lighting conditions and roadway glare. Higher speeds on open highways can intensify the force of impact, often leading to serious or fatal injuries.
When reviewing these crashes, investigators commonly examine vehicle positioning, skid marks, and road conditions. These details can help explain how a vehicle entered the opposite lane and why the collision occurred, especially when visibility and traffic patterns are factors.
