South Bend, IN (January 22, 2026) – One man is dead and two others injured following a crash that occurred during a police pursuit early on January 21 in South Bend. The deadly incident involved a vehicle reportedly stolen and led officers on a brief chase through city streets before ending in a violent collision.
According to a press release from the South Bend Police Department, officers attempted to stop a GMC Sierra near the intersection of South St and Fellows St around 3:30 a.m. The vehicle, identified as stolen, failed to stop, initiating a pursuit.
Shortly after the pursuit began, the driver of the GMC Sierra lost control and crashed. One male occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. Two additional individuals inside the vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The severity of their conditions has not yet been released.
Authorities have not confirmed if any other vehicles were involved or if bystanders were affected. Police remained on scene for an extended period to investigate, document evidence, and clear the wreckage.
The South Bend Police Department is continuing its investigation into the events leading up to the crash and the circumstances surrounding the vehicle theft and pursuit.
