Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur on Busy Roadways
Pedestrian crashes are more likely to occur on busy roads where traffic moves steadily, and vehicles travel at higher speeds. When people attempt to cross these roadways, they may have only a moment to judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles.
Lighting conditions can also influence visibility, especially during early morning or nighttime hours. Drivers may have less time to notice a person in the roadway when visibility is reduced.
Roadway design can also affect pedestrian safety. Wide roads with several lanes may require pedestrians to spend more time crossing, which increases exposure to moving traffic.
