St. Charles County, MO (April 12, 2026) – A deadly two-vehicle crash shut down westbound Interstate 70 for several hours Saturday morning, April 11, in St. Charles County. The collision occurred around 7:30 a.m. just before Route A.
According to early reports, a 2022 Hyundai Elantra drifted out of its lane and struck the left rear of a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. The impact caused the pickup to skid across the roadway, spin, and overturn. The driver of the Toyota was ejected in the crash.
A 70-year-old man from St. Charles, who was driving the Toyota, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. He later died from those injuries. No other people were reported hurt in the crash.
All westbound lanes of I-70 were closed near Route A as emergency units worked at the scene. Traffic was diverted at Lake St. Louis Blvd during the closure. The roadway reopened at about 10:30 a.m. the same morning.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Lane Departures Can Lead to Serious Highway Accidents
When a vehicle leaves its lane on a highway, the risk of a serious crash rises quickly. Even a slight drift can lead to contact with another vehicle, especially at higher speeds where reaction time is limited.
Rear-end side impacts, like the one described in this type of event, can cause a vehicle to lose balance. This may lead to spinning or rolling, especially for lighter trucks or pickups. When a vehicle overturns, the chance of a person being thrown from the vehicle increases if seat belts are not properly used.
Road conditions, driver focus, and vehicle control all affect how safely a vehicle stays within its lane. Staying alert and maintaining steady control can help reduce the risk of similar accidents on busy highways.
