Why Motorcycle and Passenger Vehicle Crashes Often Result in Fatal Injuries
Motorcycles are smaller and lighter than most passenger vehicles. Because riders are exposed, they do not have the same structural protection as those in a car or truck.
During a crash, a rider can be thrown from the motorcycle or directly struck by another vehicle. Even at moderate speeds, this type of impact can lead to severe or fatal injuries.
Visibility can also be a factor in motorcycle crashes. Drivers may have difficulty noticing motorcycles when turning, changing lanes, or crossing an intersection.
Differences in vehicle size and weight also play a role. When a motorcycle collides with a larger vehicle, the rider often absorbs most of the impact, increasing the severity of injuries.
