Why Pedestrian Crashes at Night Can Be Especially Dangerous
Pedestrian crashes that occur after dark often involve reduced visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. Street lighting, weather conditions, and vehicle headlights can all affect how clearly drivers see the road ahead.
When pedestrians are walking in travel lanes instead of designated sidewalks, the risk of a crash can increase. Drivers may not expect someone to be in the roadway, especially on streets with faster-moving traffic.
Clothing color can also affect visibility. Dark clothing can make it harder for drivers to notice someone until they are very close.
Because pedestrians have no physical protection from vehicle impacts, crashes involving pedestrians can result in severe injuries, particularly when vehicles are traveling at higher speeds.
