St. Louis, MO (March 23, 2026) – A man lost his life on Saturday night, March 21, after a crash involving a stopped vehicle along North Outer Road and Interstate 44. The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. as traffic moved westbound in the area.
Authorities reported that a 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 was stopped at the gore point where North Outer Road meets I-44. The driver had stepped out and was working on the truck and an attached tow unit at the time.
As this was happening, a 2018 Chevrolet Impala traveling west struck the towed unit connected to the Dodge. The impact caused the Chevrolet to leave the roadway, hit a nearby fence, and come to rest in a grassy divider.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 73-year-old man from Fenton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Dodge driver was not hurt in the crash.
The police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Can Happen When Vehicles Are Stopped Near Highway Merge Points?
Highway merge areas and gore points are designed to guide traffic safely between lanes, but they can also create risk when vehicles stop in these zones. Drivers approaching these areas often focus on merging or maintaining speed, which can reduce reaction time if something unexpected appears ahead.
When a vehicle is stopped near a high-speed roadway, visibility becomes a major concern. Even with hazard lights or warning signals, other drivers may not notice the obstruction in time to avoid a crash, especially at night.
Crashes involving disabled vehicles often lead to secondary impacts. These can include leaving the roadway, striking fixed objects, or entering nearby shoulders or dividers. Roadside awareness and quick hazard recognition are key to reducing these incidents.
