Gaithersburg, MD (March 23, 2026) – A Maryland man was arrested Sunday night, March 22, after striking a trooper inside a marked patrol vehicle on southbound Interstate 270. The crash occurred around 9:21 p.m. near Watkins Mill Road.
Officials said 35-year-old Job David Martinez of Gaithersburg struck the patrol car from behind while the trooper had emergency lights activated and was inside the vehicle setting up a work zone. Martinez attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by another trooper already at the scene.
The trooper was taken to a local hospital with injuries and has since been released. The right lane of Interstate 270 remained closed for more than four hours while authorities responded and investigated the scene.
Martinez was charged with suspected driving under the influence. Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and additional details will be provided as they become available.
We wish the trooper a full recovery.
Work Zone Crashes and Driver Safety
Work zones present unique hazards for drivers and emergency personnel. Reduced lanes, sudden stops, and the presence of workers or parked vehicles increase the risk of collisions. Crashes involving stopped patrol vehicles are especially dangerous due to limited reaction time and proximity.
Impaired driving significantly heightens these risks, making it harder for drivers to maintain control and respond to traffic changes. Even at low speeds, collisions with stationary vehicles can cause serious injury.
Authorities urge drivers to slow down, pay attention, and follow signage in work zones to protect both themselves and those working or responding to incidents along the roadway.
