Strafford, MO (April 7, 2026) – An Arizona man was killed in a four-vehicle crash on I-44, about 2.5 miles east of Strafford. The collision occurred around 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7.
According to investigators, a westbound semi-truck made an unsafe lane change and struck an SUV. The latter then collided with the rear of a pickup truck’s towed unit as the chain reaction continued.
The semi crossed the cable barrier into the eastbound lanes and struck another semi’s towed unit. The second semi went off the roadway and overturned, while the first truck caught fire.
The 55-year-old driver of the first semi, from Avondale, Arizona, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and it is unknown whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Multi-Vehicle Crashes Can Escalate on Highways
Multi-vehicle crashes on highways often begin with a single action, such as an unsafe lane change. When traffic is moving at high speeds, even a minor impact can quickly involve several vehicles.
Barriers are designed to separate opposing directions of travel, but in severe crashes, vehicles can cross into the opposing lane. This increases the risk of additional collisions and more serious outcomes.
Large trucks add complexity because of their size and weight. When they lose control or collide with other vehicles, the force can lead to rollovers, fires, and widespread damage across multiple lanes.
