Sumter County, FL (May 12, 2026) – A deadly chain-reaction crash involving multiple tractor-trailers shut down southbound Interstate 75 overnight Monday in Sumter County. The fatal collision occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. on May 11, near mile marker 325, just past the interchange to Florida’s Turnpike.

According to preliminary information, the crash began after a tractor-trailer struck a Ford F-350 that was towing a motorhome. The impact forced the truck off the roadway, while the Ford came to a controlled stop on the shoulder. The motorhome was severely damaged, and debris spread across the southbound lanes.

A Honda CR-V later struck the debris and became disabled in the roadway. No injuries were reported in that initial sequence of crashes. Traffic slowed significantly in the area following the wreckage.

Shortly after 11:34 p.m., a separate tractor-trailer failed to slow down in congested traffic near mile marker 326 and struck another tractor-trailer, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving two additional tractor-trailers. One of the drivers, a 60-year-old man from Georgia, was ejected from his vehicle and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Another driver sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. Two additional drivers involved in the crash were not injured. Southbound lanes remained closed for hours as crews cleared debris and investigated the scene, with partial reopening occurring the following afternoon.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crashes.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, and our thoughts are with those injured.

Why Multi-Truck Chain-Reaction Crashes Can Quickly Become Deadly on Highways

Chain-reaction crashes involving large commercial vehicles often occur when traffic suddenly slows and following distances are reduced. Because tractor-trailers require significantly more stopping distance than passenger vehicles, even a brief delay in braking can lead to secondary impacts.

Highway corridors like Interstate 75 carry heavy freight traffic, which increases the likelihood of multi-vehicle involvement during congestion or debris-related hazards. Once the roadway is partially blocked, visibility and reaction time can decrease for approaching drivers.

When multiple large trucks are involved, the force of impact is often amplified, leading to severe vehicle damage, lane blockages, and extended closures. Investigators typically examine brake timing, traffic density, and roadway conditions to understand how each impact occurred in the sequence of events.
