Allegheny County, PA (July 23, 2026) – A 54-year-old SUV driver lost his life on Tuesday, July 21, after a tractor-trailer crossed the median on I-279 in Ohio Township and struck his vehicle. According to state police, the truck was traveling southbound when the driver lost control, went through the median and guide rail, and entered the northbound lanes.

The Lincoln Navigator was being driven by Joseph Sasso, who was pronounced dead at the roadway. The tractor-trailer driver was taken to a hospital for treatment. No additional injuries were reported.

The highway’s northbound lanes between the Bellevue/West View and Camp Horne Road interchanges remained closed for several hours while crews worked at the site. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes. The crash also led to the temporary closure of the outbound I-579 HOV lanes until the scheduled directional switch for the morning commute.

Additional details about the cause of the collision have not been released. The investigation into what led to the wreck is still underway.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Joseph Sasso’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Why Median-Crossing Crashes Usually Result in Severe Outcomes

Crashes involving vehicles that cross a highway median are usually among the most serious because they can place traffic traveling in opposite directions directly in harm’s way. On high-speed roads such as interstates, these encounters frequently leave drivers with little time to react or avoid another vehicle.

Investigators typically review factors such as vehicle speed, mechanical condition, roadway design, weather, and driver actions to determine the cause of a vehicle leaving its lane. Physical evidence, including tire marks, guardrail damage, and vehicle positions, can help reconstruct the sequence of events. Information gathered during this process provides a clearer understanding of how the crash occurred and may help identify measures that could reduce the risk of similar tragedies in the future.
