Why ATV Riders Face Increased Risks in Traffic-Related Collisions
ATVs are commonly used for recreation and work, but they can pose unique safety challenges in traffic-related collisions. Unlike passenger vehicles, ATVs generally offer little protection to riders in a collision with another vehicle.
Ejection is one of the most common causes of injury in ATV crashes. When a rider is thrown from the vehicle, the likelihood of cuts, bruises, fractures, and other physical harm can increase. Factors such as vehicle speed, roadway surface conditions, and the angle of contact may influence injury severity.
Investigators often review vehicle positions, witness statements, and damage patterns to understand how an ATV collision occurred. They may also examine visibility, traffic movements, and roadway conditions. These details can help establish the sequence of actions leading up to the crash and provide a clearer understanding of the factors involved.
