Middletown, NJ (June 12, 2026) – A 15-year-old boy was seriously injured after his e-bike struck the rear of a stopped car in Middletown on Wednesday evening.
The crash happened at approximately 5:24 p.m. near the intersection of Newman Springs Road (County Road 520) and Jumping Brook Road. Police said the e-bike rider collided with a car that was stopped along Newman Springs Road.
The teen, who lives in Middletown, was found lying in the roadway when emergency units arrived. He was taken by ambulance to Hackensack Meridian Health Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, and his name has not been released due to his age.
The driver and passenger in the car were not hurt and remained at the crash site while cooperating with the investigation. The incident led to the closure of Newman Springs Road for several hours.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing. We are thinking of the teen as he receives medical care and wish him a full recovery.
Why E-Bike Collisions With Stationary Vehicles Can Be Severe
E-bike riders are particularly vulnerable in traffic incidents because they have limited physical protection compared to occupants of motor vehicles. When a rider collides with a stationary or slowing vehicle, the sudden deceleration can result in serious injuries, even at moderate speeds.
Helmet use can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries, but it cannot prevent all trauma, especially in high-force impacts. Roadway conditions, rider speed, and visibility also play roles in how these crashes occur.
In incidents involving e-bikes and cars, investigators often review traffic flow, rider awareness, braking distance, and visibility at the time of impact. These factors help clarify how the sequence of events unfolded and whether any environmental or behavioral conditions contributed to the crash.
