Why Rural Intersection Crashes Often Lead to Serious Injuries
Crashes at rural intersections frequently occur when stop signs or right-of-way rules are misjudged by drivers approaching at higher speeds. Limited traffic control devices and long stretches of roadway can sometimes make it harder to gauge the speed or distance of oncoming vehicles.
When collisions occur at these intersections, vehicles may leave the roadway due to the force of impact, especially if drivers attempt late braking or evasive maneuvers. Investigators typically examine signage visibility, roadway markings, and vehicle positions to understand how the crash developed. These types of crashes often result in multiple injuries because several occupants may be in each vehicle at the time of impact.
