How Highway Interchanges Can Increase Traffic Risks
Highway interchanges often bring together vehicles traveling at different speeds within a short distance. Drivers may be merging, changing lanes, or slowing for exits while nearby traffic continues moving at highway pace. These quick changes can raise the chance of sudden contact between vehicles, especially during busy afternoon travel periods.
Traffic backups near ramps can also make it harder for motorists to react in time. Even minor slowdowns may create chain reactions when drivers follow too closely or fail to notice stopped traffic ahead. Weather, visibility, and driver distraction may further affect how safely vehicles move through these sections of roadway. Because of these factors, interchange zones are commonly monitored for congestion and traffic safety concerns.
