Tumwater, WA (April 20, 2026) – A chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles left several people hurt on Saturday night in Tumwater.
The crash occurred around 9:39 p.m. at North Street and Hoadly Street. Emergency units responded and found at least three heavily damaged vehicles, along with debris scattered across the roadway. A light pole and nearby tree were also knocked down, and one driver was trapped before being helped by bystanders.
Reports indicate a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck another car from behind, causing both to spin and leading to a series of impacts involving additional vehicles. Several people were taken to the hospital, including a 10-year-old child who suffered critical injuries and was later transferred for further care.
The driver believed to have caused the crash is suspected of impaired driving, though further details have not been confirmed.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Chain-Reaction Crashes Can Affect Multiple Vehicles Quickly
Chain-reaction crashes happen when an initial collision triggers additional impacts involving other vehicles. These incidents are more likely on roads where traffic is moving in the same direction, and vehicles are traveling close together.
Speed is often a key factor. When a vehicle strikes another at high speed, it can push that vehicle into others nearby. This can lead to multiple points of impact and increase the number of people affected.
Obstacles such as trees, poles, or roadside structures can add to the severity. When vehicles leave the roadway, they may strike fixed objects, causing additional damage and injuries. These conditions can make the scene more complex for responders to manage.
