Springfield, IL (July 14, 2026) – Two people were taken to the hospital following a four-vehicle accident Sunday morning on eastbound I-72 at I-55 in Springfield. The Illinois State Police responded to the collision shortly after 11 a.m.
An initial report indicated that multiple people were taken to the hospital. However, an update released on Monday, July 13, clarified that two people were hospitalized. The police also stated it remains unknown whether a truck-tractor semi-trailer was involved.
All eastbound lanes of I-72 were closed for more than an hour before reopening at approximately 12:22 p.m. The extent of the injuries has not been released, and additional details about the vehicles involved were unavailable at the time of publication.
