Why Highway Motorcycle Crashes Often Lead to Severe Outcomes
Motorcycle crashes on highways can be especially serious because riders have less protection than people inside cars. Even with safety gear, a motorcycle rider can suffer major injuries during a collision with a larger vehicle.
Highway crashes may also create added risks due to speed, low lighting, and traffic moving in multiple lanes. At night, visibility can change quickly, especially along rural or less-developed stretches of road.
After a fatal motorcycle accident, crews often close travel lanes to protect everyone at the scene. These closures can also give responders room to assist victims, remove damaged vehicles, and clear debris from the roadway.
