Why Pedestrian Accidents Often Occur at Busy Intersections
Pedestrian crashes frequently occur at intersections where both foot traffic and vehicle movement are high. Downtown areas often have crosswalks, turning vehicles, and changing traffic signals that can create complex conditions for drivers and pedestrians.
Visibility is another factor that can influence safety at intersections. Parked vehicles, large trucks, or street features may limit a driver’s view of someone crossing the road. At the same time, pedestrians may misjudge the speed or distance of approaching vehicles.
Traffic congestion can also increase risk. When vehicles move slowly or stop frequently, drivers may focus on surrounding traffic and fail to notice a person stepping into a crosswalk.
Many cities use marked crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and traffic calming measures to help reduce these incidents. Even with these features in place, attentiveness from both drivers and pedestrians helps reduce the likelihood of crashes.
