What Are the Common Risks of Riding E-Scooters on New York Streets?
E-scooters have become a common sight on streets across New York, including in suburban communities on Long Island. While they offer a convenient way to get around, they also expose riders to risks that are different from those faced by cyclists or drivers. Riders sit lower to the ground, move at speeds that can surprise other road users, and have little physical protection in a crash.
Collisions between e-scooters and larger vehicles like SUVs tend to result in injuries that are concentrated in the upper body — arms, hands, and the face — because riders often instinctively reach out or lean forward on impact. Facial injuries are especially common when a rider is thrown toward a vehicle door or the pavement. New York state has specific rules governing where e-scooters can legally operate, and the interaction between scooters and turning or parked vehicles remains one of the more frequent causes of injury on local streets.
