What Can Contribute to Bicycle Crashes on Multi-Lane Roads?
Bicycle crashes on larger roads often involve differences in speed between vehicles and riders. Drivers may not expect a bicyclist to enter the roadway, especially at night when visibility is lower.
Lighting conditions and traffic flow can affect reaction time. If a bicyclist moves into a lane of travel, a driver may have only seconds to respond.
Road design also matters. Wide lanes, turning areas, and limited bike infrastructure can increase the risk of conflict between vehicles and cyclists at busy intersections.
