Washington Township, PA (February 21, 2026) – Two residents were taken to the hospital Friday evening, February 20, after a fire destroyed a home on 423 Hoover Drive in Washington Township. The blaze was reported around 7:20 p.m.
Multiple fire departments responded to the scene. Officials said a father and his adult son were cooking on the back deck when the house caught fire. Both were able to get out safely before crews arrived.
The two men were transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No emergency responders were hurt during the incident. Firefighters continued battling hotspots and heavy smoke as late as 9 p.m.
Crews used a ladder truck and hose lines from the street while tanker trucks supplied water. Part of the home collapsed during the fire. A nearby house sustained smoke and heat damage but did not catch fire. Utility workers also responded and confirmed there were no gas-related issues at the property.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. We hope the two residents recover quickly as they receive medical care.
How Backyard Cooking Can Lead to Rapidly Spreading House Fires
Outdoor cooking areas, especially on decks attached to homes, can pose fire risks if flames or hot surfaces are too close to siding or railings. Wood decking and exterior walls can ignite quickly when exposed to high heat or grease flare-ups.
Once flames reach the structure, fire can move into attics and wall spaces. Wind and open deck layouts may allow fire to spread faster than expected. Homes with shared materials or nearby structures can also face smoke or heat damage, even if flames do not directly reach them.
Fire safety officials often recommend keeping grills and cooking equipment several feet away from any structure. Having a fire extinguisher nearby and avoiding cooking under overhangs can help reduce the chance of a small incident turning into a major loss.
