Whitman County, WA (May 11, 2026) – A 42-year-old Spokane man was killed late on Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle near LaCrosse in Whitman County, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Troopers said the crash occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on State Route 26, approximately two miles southeast of LaCrosse. Investigators determined that a 55-year-old man from Damascus, Oregon, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt westbound when he struck the bicyclist, who was also traveling west near the fog line.
The bicyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his identity pending notification of the next of kin. The driver of the Chevrolet and his passenger were not injured in the crash.
Investigation Into Fatal Bicycle Crash
Washington State Patrol Sgt. Greg Riddell said investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in either the driver’s or the bicyclist’s impairment. Authorities noted that the driver has fully cooperated with investigators and that no charges have been filed at this time.
Fatal bicycle crashes on rural highways often raise concerns about nighttime visibility and cyclist safety. Officials continue to remind bicyclists to wear reflective gear and use lights when traveling after dark, while motorists are urged to remain attentive and watch for vulnerable road users on highways and rural roads.
