Wichita, KS (April 19, 2026) – A three-vehicle crash involving a police unit left multiple people hurt Saturday night, April 18, at the intersection of First St and Hillside St in Wichita.
Emergency units were dispatched around 10:06 p.m. after reports of an officer involved in a crash while responding to a call. Initial reports indicated one person was pinned inside a vehicle, and several others required medical evaluation at the scene.
Crews worked to remove the trapped person while assessing multiple occupants. Two people were later taken to the hospital with serious injuries, including a 25-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman. Three others involved in the crash declined further medical care after being checked.
Updated information shows a 22-year-old officer driving a police SUV with emergency lights activated entered the intersection and struck a vehicle traveling with the right of way. The impact caused both vehicles to spin, and the police SUV came to rest on a nearby sidewalk.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
What Happens When Emergency Vehicles Are Involved in Traffic Crashes?
Crashes involving emergency vehicles can be complex due to the conditions under which they operate. These vehicles often respond quickly to calls, sometimes traveling through intersections with lights and sirens activated. This can create situations where timing and visibility are critical.
Other drivers may not always see or hear an approaching emergency vehicle right away. Intersections are especially risky, as vehicles may enter from multiple directions at once. Even with warning signals, collisions can still occur if the intersection is not cleared safely.
When these incidents happen, multiple people may be affected due to the number of vehicles involved. Medical crews often assess everyone at the scene, as injuries can vary from minor to serious depending on the impact and position of each person.
