Columbus, OH (June 19, 2026) – A 72-year-old woman lost her life following a collision involving a COTA bus at the intersection of Allegheny Ave and James Rd in east Columbus on Wednesday, June 17.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers responded to the crash scene at approximately 7:15 p.m. Investigators said a COTA bus was stopped in the southbound lanes of James Rd, just south of Allegheny Ave, when a Nissan pickup truck struck the rear of the bus for reasons that remain under investigation.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as Patricia McQueen, sustained critical injuries in the collision. She was transported to Grant Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Officials reported that no injuries were sustained by passengers or personnel aboard the bus. The Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit responded to the scene and continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. They are working to determine what factors contributed to the crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Patricia McQueen during this difficult time.

Why Are Rear-End Collisions With Large Vehicles Severe?

Rear-end crashes involving buses, commercial vehicles, or other large transportation units can result in significant damage to smaller passenger vehicles. Because larger vehicles have greater mass and elevated rear structures, the occupants of smaller vehicles may face a higher risk of serious injury during an impact.

Investigators reviewing these collisions typically examine vehicle speeds, traffic conditions, visibility, roadway design, and any mechanical issues that may have been present. Evidence from the crash scene, including vehicle damage and roadway markings, can help establish a clearer timeline of events.

In addition, investigators may review driver actions, environmental conditions, and witness statements to better understand what occurred before impact. These factors are important in determining how the collision unfolded and whether any contributing circumstances were involved.
