Why Crosswalk Visibility and Road Conditions Matter in Pedestrian Crashes
Pedestrian crashes usually happen when people attempt to cross busy roads outside designated crossing points or when visibility is limited for drivers. Road design, traffic speed, lighting, weather, and the presence of marked crosswalks can all influence how safely pedestrians and vehicles share the roadway.
Investigations commonly review the position of the pedestrian, the driver’s direction of travel, roadway markings, traffic signals, and any available surveillance or witness accounts. Vehicle speed, sight distance, and environmental conditions may also be evaluated to better understand what occurred. These findings help create a clearer picture of the circumstances and can contribute to future roadway safety improvements aimed at reducing similar tragedies.
