Why Highway Maintenance Workers Face Serious Risks
Roadside maintenance crews work in close proximity to fast-moving traffic, making them especially vulnerable to serious or fatal collisions. Even when work vehicles, warning signs, and safety equipment are in place, workers remain at risk if motorists fail to slow down or move over.
Fatal crashes involving highway workers are thoroughly investigated to determine the sequence of events and identify any contributing factors. Investigators typically examine the crash scene, vehicle damage, roadway conditions, witness statements, and any available video evidence. These findings help determine how the collision occurred and may inform future roadway safety improvements for work zones.
