Lawnside, NJ (July 16, 2026) – A 26-year-old woman was killed after a vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree early on Tuesday, July 14, along the southbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike in Lawnside Borough.

The accident happened at approximately 2:33 a.m. when a Volkswagen SUV traveled off the right side of the highway and hit a tree. Emergency units arrived and found multiple occupants inside the SUV.

A front-seat passenger was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Three other people were injured, though the extent of their injuries was not released. The woman who lost her life has not yet been publicly identified, and no additional information about the people involved has been made available.

Investigators are continuing to examine what led the SUV to leave the roadway, and more information is expected as the review progresses.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the woman’s family, friends, and all those grieving this loss.

Why Do Vehicles Sometimes Leave the Roadway?

A vehicle leaving the roadway can happen for many different reasons, and investigators usually examine several factors before determining what caused it. Driver fatigue, distraction, speeding, sudden medical emergencies, poor weather, or mechanical problems may all contribute to a vehicle departing from its lane. Road design, lighting conditions, and visibility are also commonly reviewed when reconstructing how such a crash occurred.

Physical evidence, including tire marks, vehicle damage, and roadway conditions, can help build a clearer picture of the moments leading up to the impact. In cases involving serious injuries or fatalities, investigators may also review witness statements and other available evidence to better understand the sequence of events before reaching any conclusions.
