Salem, OR (July 16, 2026) – A motorcyclist was hurt after a wreck on I-5 in Salem on Tuesday, July 14, following reports that the rider was traveling at more than 100 mph before striking another vehicle.

According to published reports, the Harley-Davidson motorcycle was seen weaving through southbound traffic at about 104 mph, roughly 3 miles north of the junction with Highway 22. The motorcycle then struck the rear of a silver Honda, leading to the collision.

The rider was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Honda driver was not reported injured. Two southbound lanes of I-5 were temporarily closed while emergency units worked on the roadway, causing traffic to back up for several miles. The motorcyclist was later cited on allegations of reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

Additional details had not been released at the time of publication, although the cause of the collision remains under review as investigators continue gathering information.

Our thoughts are with the person injured, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

Why High-Speed Motorcycle Crashes Can Be Especially Serious

Motorcycle crashes involving high speeds usually result in severe outcomes because riders have far less physical protection than those inside passenger vehicles. Even with proper safety gear, the force generated at higher speeds can increase the likelihood of significant injuries and extensive vehicle damage.

Detectives typically examine several factors after this type of roadway collision, including vehicle speed, traffic flow, lane changes, road conditions, and physical evidence left at the site. Video footage, witness statements, and damage patterns may also help clarify how the sequence of events unfolded. Early reports mostly provide only basic facts, while additional findings become available as more evidence is reviewed. These details can offer a clearer picture of what occurred and help explain the circumstances surrounding the collision.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
