Why Rear-Impact Crashes at Rural Intersections Can Be Severe?
Crashes at highway intersections like MO-D and E 223rd St often happen at higher speeds than those inside city limits. When one vehicle strikes the side or rear corner of another, the force can cause heavy damage, especially if both vehicles are moving.
Rear-side impacts are sometimes linked to drivers misjudging distance, failing to yield, or reacting late to traffic ahead. In rural areas, darker roadways and fewer traffic controls may also affect visibility at night.
Even when injuries are described as minor, teens and adults may still require hospital evaluation after a crash. Safety devices such as seat belts can reduce the risk of more serious harm, but they do not eliminate injury altogether. Drivers approaching intersections are encouraged to slow down, check for cross traffic, and remain alert to reduce the likelihood of similar accidents.
