West Palm Beach, FL (February 23, 2026) – A 24-year-old man died on Sunday night after a collision between a motorcycle and an SUV at South Haverhill Road and Purdy Lane. The crash occurred at approximately 8:28 p.m. on February 22.
According to authorities, a 2023 Ford Expedition driven by 70-year-old Wilfredo Lazo-Graupera of West Palm Beach was traveling southbound on Haverhill Road and attempting to turn left onto Purdy Lane. At the same time, a 2018 Honda CBR 1000 RR motorcycle was heading northbound through the intersection.
Investigators said the SUV turned left in front of the motorcycle, violating its right of way. The motorcycle struck the passenger-side rear quarter panel and bumper of the SUV. After impact, the motorcycle rotated and slid north, coming to rest near the center of the intersection. The SUV stopped on the southeast corner.
The motorcyclist, identified as Brayan Alexis Torres-Zelaya of West Palm Beach, was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The SUV driver was not hurt, and authorities said alcohol and drugs were not factors.
The incident remains under review by authorities. Our condolences go out to the motorcyclist’s family and friends.
Why Left-Turn Crashes Involving Motorcycles Can Be Deadly
Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than most passenger vehicles. When a driver turns left across traffic, it can be harder to judge the speed and distance of an approaching motorcycle.
Left-turn crashes are among the most common types of motorcycle accidents at intersections. Even at moderate speeds, a direct impact can throw a rider from the bike, increasing the risk of severe injury.
Unlike drivers inside enclosed vehicles, motorcyclists do not have the same level of protection. Helmets and protective gear can reduce harm, but riders remain exposed. Intersections require careful attention from all drivers to reduce the risk of these serious collisions.
