How Do Road Conditions Like Ice Contribute to Multi-Vehicle Crashes?
Icy roads can reduce tire traction and make it harder for drivers to maintain control. Even at lower speeds, vehicles may slide unexpectedly, especially when braking or turning. This can increase the risk of crossing into other lanes or colliding with nearby vehicles.
Larger vehicles, such as trucks, may require more distance to stop, making sudden changes in road conditions harder to handle. When ice is present, even experienced drivers can struggle to keep control.
Drivers often adjust by reducing speed and increasing following distance. However, unexpected patches of ice can still lead to crashes, especially on rural roads where treatment may be limited.
