Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur at Night
Pedestrian crashes are more likely to occur at night when visibility is reduced. Drivers may have difficulty spotting someone walking along or crossing a roadway, especially in areas with limited street lighting.
Dark clothing, shadows, and glare from headlights can also make pedestrians harder to see. Even when drivers are paying attention, they may not notice a person until the person is close to the roadway.
Road design can also affect safety. Some roads lack sidewalks or clearly marked crosswalks, leading pedestrians to walk along the shoulder or cross at locations without traffic signals.
Traffic speed is another factor that can influence the severity of pedestrian crashes. At higher speeds, drivers have less time to react, and stopping distances become longer.
