Paso Robles, CA (March 26, 2026) – Two people suffered major injuries after a multi-vehicle crash early on Thursday morning at the intersection of eastbound Highway 46 and Union Road in Paso Robles.
Emergency units were dispatched to the area around 5:21 a.m. following reports of a collision involving three vehicles. When crews arrived, they found significant damage at the intersection and began assisting those involved.
Responders worked to remove two people who were trapped inside one of the vehicles. After being freed, both individuals were taken to a nearby hospital with major injuries.
Officials said none of the occupants from the other vehicles involved in the crash were taken to the hospital from the scene. Authorities did not release the identities of the injured individuals.
The collision temporarily blocked both eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 46 as crews worked at the scene. The roadway was later cleared, and all lanes reopened later in the morning.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Occur at Highway Intersections
Highway intersections can present complex driving conditions because vehicles may approach from multiple directions at varying speeds. Drivers may be slowing down to turn, accelerating onto the highway, or continuing straight through the intersection.
When several vehicles reach an intersection at the same time, the chance of a collision can increase if one driver misjudges speed or distance. Limited visibility, early morning lighting conditions, or traffic signals can also affect how drivers react.
Crashes involving multiple vehicles may result in more severe damage because the initial impact can push vehicles into others nearby. In some situations, occupants may become trapped if doors or vehicle frames are damaged.
Emergency responders sometimes need to remove victims from heavily damaged vehicles before they can receive medical care, which can extend the time needed to clear the scene and reopen the roadway.
