Why Pedestrian Crashes on Freeways Are Often Fatal
Pedestrian crashes on high-speed roadways like freeways are extremely dangerous due to the speed and size of vehicles. Pedestrians have no protection against the impact, making injuries severe or fatal.
Freeway shoulders and lanes are not designed for foot traffic, and low visibility at night can increase the risk. Quick response from emergency units is critical, but survival often depends on the circumstances of the impact. Traffic cameras and technology such as license plate readers can aid authorities in identifying drivers involved in hit-and-run incidents.
