Augusta County, VA (February 28, 2026) – Authorities are searching for a white pickup truck believed to have been involved in a fiery multi-vehicle crash on Thursday morning on Interstate 64 in Augusta County.
According to the Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 9:33 a.m. on I-64 near the South Delphine Avenue exit.
Investigators reported that a tractor-trailer hauling an oversized load was traveling eastbound in the right lane at about 35 mph. Pilot vehicles were positioned in front of and behind the tractor-trailer to assist with traffic control.
Police said a white pickup truck traveling in the same direction abruptly changed lanes to avoid one of the pilot vehicles, cutting off a white Subaru in the left lane.
“The driver and a juvenile passenger were assisted from the vehicle by passersby prior to the vehicle becoming fully engulfed,” state police said in a release. Both individuals were transported to UVA Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The pickup truck involved in the initial lane change continued eastbound without stopping. Police described the vehicle as a white pickup truck equipped with a camper shell featuring orange reflective tape along the top edge. The driver was described as an adult white male with a beard.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Virginia State Police Division 1 Dispatch at #77 from a cellular phone or 540-444-778.

How Sudden Lane Changes Near Oversized Loads Can Trigger Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Highway operations involving oversized loads introduce unique traffic dynamics. Tractor-trailers transporting large cargo often travel at reduced speeds and are accompanied by pilot vehicles to manage surrounding traffic. These escort vehicles help alert motorists and maintain safe spacing.
When drivers make abrupt lane changes in the vicinity of oversized loads, the risk of chain-reaction crashes increases significantly. Sudden merges can force trailing vehicles to brake aggressively or swerve, particularly in high-speed corridors such as Interstate 64.
In this case, investigators are examining whether the pickup truck’s lane maneuver directly contributed to the Subaru’s loss of control. Rear-end and side-impact collisions with commercial vehicles can destabilize passenger cars, especially when braking occurs at highway speeds.
Vehicle fires following median or embankment impacts are not uncommon when fuel systems or engine components are compromised during a crash. Rapid intervention by bystanders in assisting occupants from the burning Subaru likely prevented more severe outcomes.
Hit-and-run elements further complicate investigations. When a vehicle leaves the scene after contributing to a crash, authorities rely heavily on witness accounts, roadway cameras, and vehicle descriptions to identify and locate the driver.
Motorists are reminded to exercise caution around oversized loads, maintain safe following distances, and avoid abrupt lane changes that can endanger surrounding traffic.
